Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a serious health concern. Being is known to cause many health problems such as vascular diseases and cancers, it is essential that arsenic levels be managed in groundwater wells, therefore monitoring is a primary target in utilities and environmental management.
Detecting Arsenic concentration in water is difficult. Sites must be driven to, analytical labs introduce delays, and field kits are difficult to use or lack data integrity. FRED is designed to be robust, fast, and easy to use in a variety of process waters. FRED can decrease operational cost, remove rework from travelling to the site more often than required, and provide needed information to process engineers without the hassle of expensive custom installation.
FRED has been trialled with several USA based utilities. The primary use case involved the validation of the instrument with groundwater wells actively above the maximum contaminant limit of 10 ug/L arsenic. How it works?
FREDsense system is designed for ground and surface water arsenic measurement using a novel biological based method of detection. Non-hazardous bacteria are stored in a sealed cartridge. The cartridge is filled with a water sample at the site without any sample pre-treatment. Detection of arsenic at trace levels is achieved after 1 hour. Data is transmitted via wireless (or USB) for further analysis. The product is an ideal platform for rapid analysis of sample sites.
The FRED system comes in two parts: a cartridge for sample addition containing all the components needed to run the test; and a portable detector which measures and reports the results. When a water sample is added to the cartridge, the engineered sensor bacteria detects the compound and produces an electrochemical signal.
Simply fill the cartridge, place multiple cartridges into the detector device, and wait. The detector will automatically incubate the test, and in around an hour, will measure and report the resulting compound concentration either through 3G, Wi-Fi, or USB connection on a computer, mobile device, or server.
In the future, the technology will also be implemented as an autonomous sensor, which uses the same core technology, but sits onsite in a body of water and performs measurements over a period of time, with no human interaction.
